Zucrow Research Assistant

While a senior at Purdue University, I took on another challenge. I really enjoying learning complex information at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s research lab. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I searched for a similar line of work at Purdue and was surprised to find out that Zucrow Laboratory was using similar techniques.

Although I did not design this laboratory setup, I played a critical role in assisting the maintenance and operation.

The difference between the two, however, was that in Shanghai I worked with diesel engine studies, whereas at Zucrow I assisted in their flame studies. I studied alongside graduate students and assisted them however possible. In some cases, this would mean setting up and building a new laboratory experiment. The most exciting experiment I worked on involved X-ray lasers. Although this was mainly for a proof-of-concept study, it proved influential and gave me confidence and experience in working with “dangerous” systems.

I also assisted their background studies, this was most similar to my work in Shanghai. I created this Report on the differences between two highly specialized cameras. I also assisted in their understanding of the machines that they had access to. I created detailed notes and worked on creating instructions for use of a specific voltage converter.

Additionally, I designed a lab experiment in CAD that the team used to assist their setup. My design was also used to explain the experiment to students and faculty unfamiliar with the concept. Some of these images are shown below.
